A huge amount of products are just generic Chinese products that have a brand slapped on it. If you’ve ever bought a random small USB device (i.e USB hubs, etc) from a major brand like LogiTech and others, if you crack it open it is just the same device as cheap resellers with a branded coating. It’s not worth it to many companies to bother manufacturing their own small tat so they just sub-contract out.

And sure, it likely works, but it’s the exact same hardware with the same capabilities as a product a 10th of the price.

Thanks, it’s the culmination of a lot of thought and a previous attempt by my manager and I to rework things to make it better but hasn’t really worked out. Onwards and upwards, I’d still intend to find a job during the 3 months notice period before I’m set loose so ideally I won’t lose the “tempt me away” factor before I get a new gig.

It’s contractual, I’m going to serve my notice period.

I went from doer to manager, even though I’m now expected to do and manage… it isn’t enjoyable.

That would be the dream, but it hasn’t panned out, and my long notice period is hampering me. I’m not going to continue slogging it out here indefinitely, and I don’t need to.

I don’t need any additional anxiety to discourage me from getting out of this before I just burn out and am in a worse position.

Did MS derive any particular benefit from Timeline? It was a lot more localised as far as I recall. Recall seems geared to give them a lot more data that they could monetise.

It’s okay to not start in your ideal job on day one and to take sideways shifts to get closer to it. I went from phone monkey in a call centre, to a letter monkey, to a software tester, to a software business analyst (all at the same company), to a software product owner, to a software product manager. I gravitated back towards my stronger IT oriented passions over time.

I’m going to try to take this in the spirit that it was provided, but you’re using a lot of "…"s, and a lot of implications that what I’m saying is obvious, for a person trying to provide earnest assistance. I wasn’t requesting technical support or expressing surprise at these things, I was merely expressing that these were the things I was generally encountering difficulty with my transition to Linux as a daily driver.

The DisplayLink driver for instance is running, and basically functional, but ends up running slowly, with distortions, and instability. It also isn’t signed, so my plan to still run Secure Boot with the distro I’m using alongside Windows is out (without a lot of faff), but that largely won’t matter excusing some specific work setups that I don’t currently have to worry about. Having useful AMD specific driver level tools on Windows that don’t exist in Linux isn’t a surprise, it is a discouragement.

Forum content and non-Reddit content are a pain to locate, especially when you don’t know how to frame your problem in Linux syntax, as you say. Communities are either open but in specific places that I will never find without already knowing about it, or happening in places that aren’t accessible without having already joined, like the Discord of the specific software I need guidance on. My experience has been that there is basic info and there is advanced info out there, but intermediate info that lets you bridge the gap is a challenge to locate, especially with subtle differences in certain steps that are distro/package manager specific. Yet I press on.
