  • I think you said elsewhere that they are new and that they are photoelectric rather than the radioactive ones.

I’m purely taking a shot in the dark but I’m wondering if you should try sealing up the hole(s) in the wall that you made to run electric and to mount the detector

My thinking is that dust might be getting caught up in a tiny draft through that hole and it’s so close to the source that it sets it off. Cause like, if wind hits the side of the house, there can be some positive pressure in the crawlspace which often also means inside the walls.

I guess maybe somehow there could be some stream or condensation as well. If it’s right by the front door and the humidity is high, maybe the hot air from outside meets the AC air and causes a tiny amount of condensation. Or if you live in hellscape temperatures, maybe there could be some vapor generated because of the hot air.

  • They have a few options of what to do while treating workers fairly, even under the framework of capitalism

    • raise wages until workers are willing to work the nightshift permanently
    • raise prices till demand matches the output you are able to achieve while treating your workers fairly
    • increase production throughput by opening additional lines so supply you output matches demand
    • bring democracy into the workplace and let the workers decide if they want to work rotating shifts so the company can save money

Fucking over your workers isn’t an acceptable option. As a society, we can’t accept people’s lives being made worse in the name of saving money.

  • The dude defending this practice seems like the kind of guy that argues that minimum wage is bad because some business would go out of business.

Businesses that can’t function ethically shouldn’t stay in business. I don’t have much empathy for the business tyrants who punch with one hand while begging with the other

  • I don’t often actively root for tech to fail. Even if it’s something g dumb, it can pave the road for something down the road. However, I’m here for the failure of this because it’s been so nebulous.

I don’t know how to explain it, but this kind of feels like when people were trying to make products where the main hook was blockchain and they seemed to have worked backwards from the tech to a product to the problem being the last thing considered.

As far as I can tell, the only advantage this thing has that a smarter smart watch can provide is taking photos and videos. So maybe there is something there that is worth exploring. Who knows, maybe if apple or Google released this with robust integration and a reasonable price, maybe it could have some potential to have a use case. Maybe GoPro might want to explore the form factor? All that said, none of the things that I think have potential has nothing to do with AI which is what they think is feature #1.

  • I’m gonna be completely honest. I don’t truly get all the inner working of git. I’m a senior DevOps Engineer and been using git for a decade, but is git is simular to sed or awk for me. I know how to do what I want really well but when shit goes wrong, I’m flying by the seat of my pants.

A lot of times, I just know what to do to fix things because it’s rote memory with substitutions. But if you needed me to explain upstreams and rebases in actual detail, I’d be in trouble. But it rarely becomes an actual problem to the level where I’ll dedicate time to learning all the advanced stuff.

That said, I’ve learnt that most senior people also just pretend they get it all but instead are just relying on rote memorization and basic concepts. Anyone else here in the same camp of being a fraud with git?

  • The company reportedly told employees they can apply for other jobs within the company, though some doubt they’re qualified for other Apple roles in the city, and most don’t plan to move.

Sounds like it’s QA people. Which sucks extra hard cause that’s a much harder field to get another job in. If they were software engineers, the world would be their oysters. I bet a lot of people will make the move and it’s quite shitty and cynical from apple to move a team that doesn’t have a lot of options.

If they tried to move an engineering team to texas, they know they’d get told to get fucked
