Diamond Age is my all time favourite (although I read it just one time as I do with all books). In the current age of AI it is very relevant. If nano technology and AI will progress we’ll maybe head into the depicted scenario and I hope I’m still alive then.
Cryptonomicon, Anathem, The Baroque Cycle are wild rides and masterpieces too. Anathem was a bit hard to get into but it got really exciting after the first 300 pages (of ~1000) or so.
I did not read that book of Calvino (nor have I heard his name) but there exists a free game on steam called “If on a winter’s night four travelers” with very positive reviews which seems to be inspired by the book.
I only read “The Left Hand of Darkness”. That novell was fire (no pun intended). Excellent world building and super captivating and immersive writing.
K&P weren’t exaggerating probably:
I had ONE hick-up with Nvidia drivers on arch in about 6 years. I needed to downgrade them initially when Valve released the new Steam UI. That’s been fixed pretty fast. When I’m thinking back it was the only problem I had with arch upgrades in its entirety apart from one that was completely on me: installing KWinFT which completely messed up some system libraries (but was repairable). Arch was nothing but rock solid stable for me.
I’m at my 3rd moto atm. A slightly outdated g31. It came with Android 11 and only recently 2 years after I bought it, it got the 12 upgrade. Still gets regular security patches.
Next the apps installe by Motorola (where I mean by optional that you can deactivate them, not uninstall). None of these apps are in the top 12 in the battery usage statistics and most of them are activated.
A tutorial center with “kurzgesagt” like animations e.g. for gestures. A selection of shortcuts to settings for customizing your device and Motorola QOL settings.
Moto Actions and Gestures (20MB, optional)
Enables the gestures (has no other brand a shaking flashlight gesture or has Motorola patented it?).
Moto App Launcher (4MB)
The Motorola specific desktop customization. I don’t know how close it is to the Pixel stock image but it doesn’t get in my way.
Moto AI Services (whopping 200MB, optional)
The reviews for this service are scalding. I’m honestly not the biggest fan of having AI on my phone that’s not in my control. Two reviewers point out, that it probably isn’t very invasive AI and rather used for QOL features, like the shaking flashlight feature.
Moto Feedback (31MB, optional)
Helps the user sending feedback (bug-reports and memory-dumps?) to Motorola. Again smotheringly bad reviews. Never had to do with it or used it knowingly. Can be deactivated.
Motorola notifications (88MB, optional)
Again some furious reviews. Double edged sword as it’s used to send news about updates but also push ADs. But the latter isn’t very spammy. Just every few weeks or month a push notifications about a new moto. That’s about the only place where I would see ADs (apart from regular apps).

The browser login of my bank needs a separate application that’s windows only or an app. The Java(!) application Jameica saved my ass for the 6 years I’m on Linux now. It can manage multiple accounts. It offers statistics, saves all the transfers, deposits and balances ad infinitum on your disk, is searchable and has templates and schedules for transfers.
The protocol my bank uses is FinTS, I think. I’m logging in via a certificate file and a password.
I don’t want to use an app, cause I trust my cutting edge Linux (Kernel 6.7.6) a lot more than my possibly malicious app riddled outdated android.
And it’s more ethical and environmentally friendlier than Lithium-Ion, right?
Norway has just started a deep sea excavation for cobalt and copper which as I understand (I’m clueless) can be omitted from sodium-ion batteries. The excavation is roughly of the size of equador and will take place in an area that may contain previously unknown lifeforms and critically endangered eco-system.
A paragraph of an article seems to show their non-chalance regarding the ecosystem impacts and unknown side-effects:
“The Norwegian government recognizes that it can’t be sure any mining would be sustainable—it’s not been able to determine the likely environmental impact of extracting minerals in its waters, nor exactly what minerals are there to be found. “We do not currently have the knowledge needed to extract minerals from the seabed in the manner required,” says Næss.”
These are the guys whose grid runs on 99% hydropower but they keep drilling for fossile fuels and now rare earths to export them and in addition are still hunting wales.
So to summarise: I’m very happy that there seems to be an eco friendly battery where its main component is the overambundantly availabe sodium. And the short wikipedia entry seems to reflect, that it’s a more simple tech.
Don’t know anything avout xorg development although I’m profitting for years off it now. Just wanted to chime in and say that the Arch maintainers put out updates pretty constantly. If the code isn’t worked on anymore then what’s happening there?
Edit: There is definitely happening stuff with the xorg-server code.
Edit: Removed chit-chat
Seen a documentation about poland recently. A new development there is that the state is conducting military training for every citizen interested. They showed a young women, a hairdresser in her dayjob, taking part in shooting practice. The acceptance of the program within the society was generally good. I would also take part if we had those here, considering what happened in Ukraine, although I’m a pacifist.
I just read the movie plot (which seems to differ from the book) on wikipedia and searched in a non-logged-in google for “movie horror two friends dimensions drug dealer jamaican”. First result is the wanted movie. What are people searching for that they get such bad results?
Is Peru that country where lots of people, even older ones, with physically demanding jobs chew coca leaves before going to work?
Yeah it seems my post got deleted for speaking the truth. Some can’t handle it as it seems.
Semantics and philosophy are nice and fine but don’t make a difference for the animals suffering. In lack of a better definition let’s call it violence. And it isn’t incidental but systematic.
I take back my “Shut up”. But I stand by everything else I wrote.
What makes you think that?
Because it is factually wrong. I’m informing myself about that industry for many years now. I’m not an activist vegan (because where I live that doesn’t take place), but I follow many activists and have seen a lot of videos, so I know what’s going on.
Isn’t it torture to confine mother-sows for month on hard wooden planks in spaces they can’t move at all, laying in their feces and involuntary suffocating their own piglets.
Or breeding chickens that have to give 20-30 times more eggs than their ancestors which leads to calcium deficiency and lets their backbones break.
Clipping teeth, tails and testicles of young piglets without anesthesia?
Shipping calves around the world in container ships in every weather condition without proper food and water supply, where a lot of them die and the ones surviving getting kosher butchered in Morocco?
I could go on an on. I’ve seen some shit. So sorry for being condescending but such takes just make me angry.
